OPEN PRBB 2024: On Saturday October 5 we open the doors again to everyone

On October 5 from 10:00 to 14:30 h comes a new edition of the Open Day of the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) in which researchers will explain firsthand what they do, how they do it and where they do it. The different research centers that are part of the PRBB will offer a wide range of free activities for the whole family.

On Saturday morning, visitors will be able to learn about science from its protagonists with guided tours. We have prepared several routes that will simultaneously tour the building and visit different laboratories. This year, as a novelty, visitors will be able to choose the route beforehand. In addition, there will be two routes with special themes, two routes available in English and a historical route to learn about the history of the PRBB and its infrastructure.

In the case of researchers from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, their labs participate in 8 of the 15 routes that are scheduled this year, one of them in English, and also in 3 activities in the square and two outdoor science talks.

Our laboratories and the routes in which they participate:

  • The Clinical Research Unit participates along with 2 other laboratories in the special route "From lab to patient: exploring new therapies for Down syndrome" where you will be able to discover how basic research paves the way to develop innovative treatment for people with Down syndrome.
  • The Stem Cells and Cancer Lab will help us learn more about stem cells and their role in cancer. Together with ISGlobal, they will participate in the "Stem Cells and Sustainable Mobility" route.
  • The Evolutionary Genomics Group will participate together with MELIS-UPF in the "Computers to Zebrafish route" and will give a complete overview of current research in life sciences, including CRISPR and gene editing.
  • The Systems Neurology and Neurotherapies Lab will participate together with the Proteomics Service in the route "From the proteome to the treatment of the spinal cord" where visitors will be able to discover the most innovative technologies and where they will meet ultrasound and artificial intelligence devices.
  • The Immune redirection Lab will participate together with the CRG in the route "DNA sequencing and immunotherapy" where we will learn about sequencing and its applications in immunotherapy.
  • The Applied metabolomics Lab will explain how metabolites are detected and quantified in biological samples and together with the CRG will participate in the route "Early diagnosis of diseases: from metabolomics to liquid biopsies".
  • With the Translational research in tumor microenvironment Lab we will learn more about colon cancer. Together with the CRG it participates in the route "On genomics and tumors".
  • The GPCR drug discovery Lab will teach us how receptors are involved in virtually everything in our body. Together with the CRG, it participates in the route "From computer-based drug development to reconstituting a cell cytoeskeleton in vitro".

Activities in the square and workshops:

Discover the Animal Facility: Researchers from the Cell-type Mechanisms in Normal and Pathological Behavior Group together with researchers from other PRBB centers will explain how research is done with animals and in which facilities they live. Visitors will become researchers and will be taken on a fictitious tour of an animal facility.

Is it possible to prevent cancer at home? The Epidemiology and Evaluation Group will carry out several educational activities aimed at different age groups to raise awareness about early detection and prevention of cancer.

Lifestyles and heart health. Do you have healthy habits? Do you keep fit? Do you follow a Mediterranean diet? Together with researchers from the Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Genetics Group, the Cardiovascular Risk and Nutrition Group and the Girona Heart Registry (REGICOR), we will calculate your risk of suffering from coronary heart disease in the next 10 years and what you can do to prevent it.

Outdoor science: short 10-15 min talks that will take place in the indoor plaza.

This Open Day for all citizens is possible thanks to the participation of almost 200 volunteers from the different centers of the PRBB. Our thanks to all of them.

Don't miss the PRBB Open Day, we are waiting for you!
