Project title:

Deciphering de novo gene birth in populations - Research Assistant

Description:

The selected person will join the Evolutionary genomics research group (Biomedical informatics research program).

Task:

The main task of the candidate will be to assist the research of postdocs and PhD students working in the framework of the ERC Advanced Grant NovoGenePop. The main objective of the project is to identify new transcripts and translated sequences with a de novo origin from previously non-expressed parts of the genome. For this, the researcher will assist in the generation of RNA-Seq and Ribo-Seq sequencing data from primate and human lymphoblastoid cell lines, and design experiments to validate the expression of certain transcripts using PCR and other well-established techniques. The researcher will generate detailed written reports of the datasets generated and will prepare oral presentations for the other members of the group and in the framework of possible external collaborations. The project will be undertaken in collaboration with the group of Tomàs Marquès Bonet at Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

Formation:

BSc in Biology or a related subject.

Experience:

The position requires at least two years’ experience in a molecular biology laboratory. Experience with data analysis and statistics is also required.

Knowledge:

The position requires previous experience in a wide range of molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA purification, electrophoresis, cell culture, immunohistochemistry, PCR. Knowledge on data statistical treatment is also required. The candidate should have a proficient written and oral English level.
