Dr. Esther Barreiro is the editor of the book 'Physiopathology of COVID-19 in different organs and systems', published by Elsevier. It is a work and study manual for people interested in learning more about this disease. The experts from Hospital del Mar have played a leading role in the new publication by Elsevier, Physiopathology of COVID-19 in different organs and systems, the first manual that analyses, with the help of various specialists, the effects caused by SARS-CoV-2, its mechanisms of infection, treatment, and sequelae. Dr. Esther Barreiro, consultant physician in the Pneumology Department at Hospital del Mar, researcher at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), and associate professor at Pompeu Fabra University, is the editor.

Patients with type-2 diabetes affected by COVID-19 are four to five times more likely to die or suffer serious complications from the disease if their blood sugar levels are much higher or much lower than usual This has been revealed in a study led by the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service at Hospital del Mar and published in the journal Diabetes Care The ratio of glucose levels on arrival in the emergency room to the patient's usual levels has a high predictive value, more so than either of the two data separately. These levels can be determined easily through a blood test

The board of the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery has decided that the Hospital del Mar pneumologist and researcher at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute will head up the committee responsible for managing and organising the society's policy documents. The Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR), has appointed Dr. Esther Barreiro, a consultant in the Pneumology Department at Hospital del Mar and coordinator of the Muscle Wasting and Cachexia in Chronic Respiratory Diseases and Lung Cancer Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), as coordinator of the SEPAR committee responsible for managing the regulations and recommendations that will be issued by the society. The appointment was made at the first meeting of the new SEPAR governing board.

The data comes from more than 90,000 people diagnosed with COVID-19 in Catalonia up to July last year. More than 6% had suffered a stroke at some point before infection. People under the age of 60 who have suffered a stroke prior to contracting COVID-19 are three times more likely to die than those who have never suffered a stroke. This risk drops to 1.3 times in people aged between 60 and 80 and is not significant in those over 80 The researchers point out that this needs to be taken into account when determining COVID-19 vaccination priorities. The study is published in the journal Stroke. It is the first study of its kind in Spain and one of the first in the world.

The emeritus head of both the Pneumology Service at Hospital del Mar and the Myogenesis, Inflammation and Muscle Function research group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute is one of the fourteen experts invited to participate. Dr. Joaquim Gea, emeritus head of both the Pneumology service at Hospital del Mar and the Myogenesis, Inflammation and Muscle Function research group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMM), was one of the two international experts, and the only European, invited to participate in the drafting of the consensus document for the Colombian Association of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery, on the follow-up and treatment of patients who have overcome COVID-19.

Researchers from the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute and CIBERES detect an increase in oxidative stress in these patients that may favour tumour development. Reduced levels of the potent antioxidant glutathione may be used as a new early biomarker of cancer in people with chronic respiratory disease. The risk of developing lung cancer increases in patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), so understanding the cellular mechanism involved in tumour progression is key. Indeed, researchers from the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) and the CIBER on Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES) have just published a study in the journal Biomedicines that identifies the role of systemic oxidative and antioxidant markers, which are differentially expressed in these patients with chronic respiratory diseases, and are therefore involved in the development of lung cancer.

A multicentre study published in the journal Biomedicines led by the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute reveals that bronchiectasis affects women less severely than it does men. This is a highly prevalent lung disease that causes abundant accumulation of secretions in the lungs The study analysed data from more than 2,000 patients from the Spanish Computerised Registry of Patients with Bronchiectasis (RIBRON). A second study, published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, determines the role of eosinophils, immune system cells, as predictors of severity in this type of patient
The Catalan Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SCMIMC) has awarded one of its pre-doctoral grants to Dr. Elena Sendra, a consultant in Hospital del Mar's Infectious Diseases Service. This is a biannual grant that will allow her to develop her doctoral thesis project. The grant was awarded during the XXX Meeting of the society, held on 15th and 16th October in Sitges, Garraf.

Activating a molecule present in the membrane of NK lymphocytes (Natural Killer cells) makes them resistant to the immunosuppressive mechanisms of HER2-positive breast tumours and enhances their antitumour action. Combining standard treatments for HER2-positive breast cancer with drugs that target this molecule in NK cells could increase their clinical efficacy. This paves the way for a new approach to treating this type of tumour with immunotherapy This has been demonstrated in a collaborative study led by researchers at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute, published in the journal Cancer Immunology Research

With this new group, the Carlos III Health Institute's Networked Biomedical Research Centre aims to unite Spain's scientific excellence in this field to enable better funding in emerging diseases, such as COVID-19, and other research areas, including antimicrobial resistance and HIV-AIDS, in which Hospital del Mar and IMIM researchers have a great deal of experience. The Infectious Pathology and Antimicrobial Research Group (IPAR) at the Hospital de Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM) will form part of the new CIBER on Infectious Diseases. The purpose of this new group is to promote research in this field in Spain by offering new structural funding tools.
