Abstract

Cardiovascular disease and fertility problems have been shown to be highly inter-related. However, the direction of this association and the causal role of one over the other is unclear. Do cardiovascular risk factors also cause fertility problems? Are other conditions related to cardiovascular disease (low socioeconomic status, unhealthy lifestyle, etc.) responsible for these associations? Are, in turn, infertile people at higher risk of future cardiovascular disease? The combination of classic epidemiological approaches and novel methodologies on causal inference such as Mendelian randomization certainly helps to answer these and other questions.
