They have been selected along with 37 other projects to advance the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. In total, the last edition of La Marató raised 11.2 million euros.
The Hospital del Mar Research Institute will receive 1.5 million euros in funding from the 2022 La Marató de TV3 and Catalunya Ràdio. These funds will be distributed among four projects led by researchers at the institute in the field of cardiovascular health.
Dr. Montse Fitó, coordinator of the Cardiovascular Risk and Nutrition Research Group, leads a project that will analyze the role of microRNA molecules in high-density lipoproteins (HDL) in the incidence of coronary heart disease, analyzing possible personalized treatment strategies for atherosclerosis. The Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Research Institute, the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, and the University of Valencia will participate. They will receive funding of almost 400,000 euros.
In the case of Dr. Juan Domingo Gispert, coordinator of the Neuroimaging Research Group on Neurodegenerative Diseases and Healthy Aging, he heads a study on the interaction between subclinical atherosclerosis and Alzheimer's disease in middle age. The project is endowed with 399,675 euros and will involve the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares Carlos III and the Fundación Jiménez Díaz.
The coordinator of the Neurovascular Research Group, Dr. Jordi Jiménez Conde, will coordinate the MARIONA project, which will study an artificial intelligence assistant for decision-making in the acute phase of stroke. The Polytechnic University of Catalonia is participating and will receive 300,000 euros.
Dr. Anna Oliveras, a researcher in the Nephropathies Research Group, will lead a joint project with the Barcelona Institute for Biomedical Research, the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom and the Bellvitge Institute for Biomedical Research. They will have almost 400,000 euros to analyze blood pressure screening in a dental hospital, with the analysis of nitrate-reducing bacteria as a link between periodontal disease and hypertension.
Finally, Dr. Joan Jiménez Balado, researcher of the Neurovascular Research Group, is part of the STTOPED-STROKE project, which will study epigenetic regulation tools in stroke and is led by the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Research Institute.
This year, La Marató will focus on sexual and reproductive health and will be held on December 17.
