After one week of intensive training, the closing event of the INBIOMEDvision Training Challenge successfully took place in Barcelona. This training gathered together two teams of 5 PhD students with different nationalities and scientific backgrounds (chemists, medical doctors, informatics, mathematics, biologists etc.) to work on two case studies related with health sciences during one week at the Monastery of Les Avellanes (Lleida, Spain).

An international collaborative study with the participation of researchers from the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute), has studied whether the link between the levels of HDL cholesterol, commonly called “good cholesterol” and the risk of suffering an acute myocardial infarction is or isn’t causal, by using genetic biomarkers. The article will be published in the prestigious Lancet journal.

A group of researchers from the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) and from the INAD (Hospital del Mar Neuropsychiatry and Addictions Institute) has participated in an international study aiming to give a general overview at a chemical, pharmacological and behavioural level of a recently appeared new chemical compound, according to the Recreational Drugs European Network, as a new abused drug: methoxetamine (MXE).

Yesterday, Thursday 26 April, saw the conclusion in Barcelona of the first edition of GRIB EXPO, a symposium organised by the Research Programme on Biomedical Informatics (GRIB), a joint research group of the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) and Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). The aim of the EXPO was to bring Biomedical Informatics closer to the clinical sector and to industrial innovation, with a view to promoting the open exchange of ideas and cooperation.

Researchers from the Research Programme on Biomedical Informatics (GRIB) from the IMIM and the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) have identified 115 proteins via computer simulation that could be highly relevant to treat colon-rectal cancer, since they would make it possible to define the strategy to design new generation anti-cancer drugs. The study will be published in the journal PLoS ONE

Researchers at the Hospital de Mar Research Institute (IMIM) have discovered that the protein LOXL2 has a function within the cell nucleus thus far unknown. They have also described a new chemical reaction of this protein on histone H3 that would be involved in gene silencing, one of which would be involved in the progression of breast, larynx, lung and skin tumours.

The European project EU contributions to the World Mental Health Survey Initiative (EU-WMH, 2009-2011) coordinated by Jordi Alonso, started with the goal of estimating the frequency, distribution and consequences of mental disorders in Europe, while increasing awareness and strengthening existing public initiatives on mental health in the fields of research and politics.

A study lead by the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) and the Barcelona Public Health Agency (ASPB) has shown that the level of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in blood has dropped significantly in the inhabitants of Barcelona between the years 2002 and 2006. It is the first time that the temporary evolution of the concentration of persistent organic pollutants in humans is studied with a representative sample and using the same method.

Jordi Segura, Director of the Laboratory for Anti-Doping Control of the Hospital del Mar Research Institute (IMIM), was recently appointed President of the World Association of Anti-Doping Scientists (WAADS) for a two-year period and member of the Scientific Committee of the Catalan Ministry of Sport.

The prototype of a knowledge tool developed by the Open PHACTS Consortium has proven useful by identifying relevant information in a matter of seconds, when a traditional search could take days. It will provide information on small molecules, their pharmacological profile, pharmacokinetics, etc. from multiple sources available on the Internet.
