Having a higher biological or epigenetic age, which differs from chronological age and is influenced by lifestyle habits and external environmental factors, increases the risk of death in patients treated for a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Conversely, having a lower biological age increases the likelihood of experiencing one of the most common complications in these cases, the spasm of the cerebral arteries, known as vasospasm. This is the first time this relationship can be demonstrated, opening the door to research on how these factors can be modified to improve patient prognosis.

An international study published in Science Translational Medicine involving the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute shows that there are substantial differences between men and women in the energy metabolism of renal tubular cells. In men with diabetes, more markers of oxidative stress in cells and processes linked to cell death are detected, which may predispose to diabetic nephropathy. The work may provide tools to personalize the treatment and evolution of people with diabetes and kidney disease, as well as to detect possible therapeutic targets based on this fact.

11/03/2024 - Covid-19
This is revealed by a study at Hospital del Mar, which prospectively analyzed data from nearly 2,000 people followed at the center's Post-COVID Unit. The main risk factors for developing persistent COVID are obesity, asthma and the severity of the disease. Women are also at higher risk These results lead the authors of the study to consider antiviral treatment also for people with SARS-CoV-2 infection who meet these risk factors, even if they do not suffer from severe COVID.

Between 1990 and 2019, the incidence of myocardial infarction in the Girona area decreased by 1% in women and 4% in men each year in the population aged 35 to 74 years, while, in the last 10 years, its lethality, the number of people who die 28 days after the onset of symptoms, has remained stagnant at around 15%. Data from almost five million hospital admissions and more than 70,000 death certificates have been analyzed as part of the REGICOR study, Registre Gironí del COR. These data suggest that primary prevention and rapidity of care have contributed to reducing the incidence of infarction and sudden death, increasing the chances of survival among patients arriving at the hospital.

One of them is related to heart disease, according to the CARGENCORS study. The work has allowed finding a significant association of new genetic variants previously related to heart disease, thrombosis, inflammation, with the severity of COVID-19 in more than 3000 COVID-19 patients in the area of Barcelona and Girona. People with these variants have a 10-60% increased chance of developing severe disease. The CARGENCORS (CARdiovascular GENEtic risk score for Risk Stratification of patients positive for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virus) study has established a direct link between some of the genetic factors that increase the risk of heart disease and the severity of COVID-19. The work, published in the Journal of Medical Virology, marks a further step towards understanding the mechanisms of COVID-19 severity through susceptibility in heart disease.
