Yesterday, Thursday 26 April, saw the conclusion in Barcelona of the first edition of GRIB EXPO, a symposium organised by the Research Programme on Biomedical Informatics (GRIB), a joint research group of the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) and Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). The aim of the EXPO was to bring Biomedical Informatics closer to the clinical sector and to industrial innovation, with a view to promoting the open exchange of ideas and cooperation.

Researchers from the Research Programme on Biomedical Informatics (GRIB) from the IMIM and the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) have identified 115 proteins via computer simulation that could be highly relevant to treat colon-rectal cancer, since they would make it possible to define the strategy to design new generation anti-cancer drugs. The study will be published in the journal PLoS ONE

Researchers at the Hospital de Mar Research Institute (IMIM) have discovered that the protein LOXL2 has a function within the cell nucleus thus far unknown. They have also described a new chemical reaction of this protein on histone H3 that would be involved in gene silencing, one of which would be involved in the progression of breast, larynx, lung and skin tumours.

A study lead by the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) and the Barcelona Public Health Agency (ASPB) has shown that the level of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in blood has dropped significantly in the inhabitants of Barcelona between the years 2002 and 2006. It is the first time that the temporary evolution of the concentration of persistent organic pollutants in humans is studied with a representative sample and using the same method.

A study by the Healthcare Services Research Group at the IMIM has studied the per-patient costs associated with the pandemic influenza virus type H1N1, also called influenza A, from 2009. The study, has centred on the use of healthcare resources and sick leave due to employees’ temporary disability. This influenza affected more than 74 countries and caused some alarm due to its being declared pandemic and because several forecasts placed its financial burden at very high levels.

The study proved that all of parents’ mental disorders are associated with a higher tendency of suicidal ideation among their children, but only generalised anxiety and depression are associated with the actual elaboration of suicide plans and the persistence over time of suicidal ideation, while parents’ antisocial personality and anxiety disorders are associated with children attempting suicide and its persistence over time.

Doctors and researchers of Hospital del Mar and IMIM point to an acquired mutation during treatment as the causative mechanism of therapeutic failure. This discovery leads to new perspectives to improve the efficiency of treatments, the survival of patients and to advance in customized treatments against cancer

For the first time, it has been discovered that neutrophils exist in the spleen without there being an infection. This important finding made by the research group on the Biology of B Cells of IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) in collaboration with researchers from Mount Sinai in New York, has also made it possible to determine that these neutrophils have an immunoregulating role.

Nature Medicine publishes a pioneering study about a protein that regulates the expression of hundreds of genes that have a crucial role in the progression of pancreatic cancer, gliomas and possibly many other kinds of tumor. The study is directed by Pilar Navarro at the IMIM (Institut de Recerca Hospital del Mar, Barcelona) and Raúl Méndez, ICREA Research Professor at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona).
