  Diseases considered as mild most affect a country’s productivity

  

  Days of absence due to illness are the main source of lost human capital for a country’s economy. A paper led by researchers from the IMIM Health Services Research Group (Hospital del Mar Research Institute), has studied what mental and physical disorders occur most commonly and account for days of absence from the usual daily activity.

  The Virtual Human Being: simulating how the human body works

  

  Tomorrow, Friday 8th October, is the last day of the meeting of the Virtual Physiological Human Network of Excellence (VPH NoE)’s second study group. This European Network of Excellence is coordinating a five-year series of activities on the development of the Virtual Human Being, with the aim of generating simulations of multi-scale models which reproduce the way the body works from the molecule to the organ.

  Individuals with only primary education are at greater risk of suffering from an acute myocardial infarction

  

  A study conducted by researchers from IMIM in Barcelona and from the Josep Trueta University Hospital and Jordi Gol Foundation in Girona analysed the relationship between socioeconomic status and the risk of suffering from an acute myocardial infarction. Education level and social class based on occupation are indicators that are associated with the risk of having an acute myocardial infarction.

  The Mediterranean diet can help prevent cardiovascular risk in children

  

  For the first time, a study conducted by the Cardiovascular Risk and Nutrition Research Group at IMIM and the Community Nutrition Research Group - Nutrition Research Foundation (FIN) at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) shows that youth who eat a Mediterranean diet have a smaller waist circumference than those who do not.

  New therapeutic avenue discovered to fight against leukaemia

  

  A study carried out by researchers from the stem cells and cancer research group of the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) has shown that if deactivation of the NFkB protein complex in T cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia is forced, leukaemia is eliminated. This opens the doors for the development of new drugs for this type of leukaemia.

  International study shows that "Non-pharmacological Therapies" are just as effective as drugs for Alzheimer's disease.

  

  A worldwide network of 22 scientists, among them Jordi Peña, a researcher at the Research Group in Behavioral Neurology and Dementia at IMIM and neurologist at the Hospital del Mar, has just published a large study that for the first time provides clear evidence on the effectiveness of Non-pharmacological Therapies in Alzheimer’s disease.

  Diabetics in the south of Europe have less cardiovascular diseases than patients who have already had a heart attack

  

  Type 2 diabetes is a heart risk factor, along with other factors such as lipid profile, hypertension and obesity. Some studies put the cardiovascular mortality risk in diabetic patients on a par with that presented by non-diabetics who have had a first myocardial infarction. For the first time ever, it has been shown that this is not the case in the south of Europe.

  genetic risk indicator has been developed that is associated with the probability of ischaemic heart disease

  

  A study led by IMIM researchers in Barcelona has developed a genetic risk indicator that has a linear association with the probability of ischaemic heart disease. This risk indicator is independent of classic cardiovascular risk factors already known and may provide information that is supplementary to them.

  Cigarette smoke contributes to muscle dysfunction

  

  This is the first study in which proteins involved in metabolism and muscle contraction are shown to have higher levels of oxidation as a result of tobacco smoke, which could cause alterations in the structure and function of muscle fibres.

  59 new genetic variants associated with blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels have been identified

  An international study which will be published in the next issue of the prestigious journal Nature, in which researchers from the IMIM have participated, has identified 95 genetic variants related to LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Of these 95 associated genetic variants, 59 had not been previously identified.
