  A new antibody-producing molecular mechanism has been identified which could be key to lupus or rheumatoid arthritis

  An international team, led by the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, has identified a new molecular mechanism for the production of antibodies by B-lymphocytes. This finding opens the door to new treatments for autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, and perhaps tumors of the immune system such as lymphoma and multiple myeloma.

  Rare genetic variants also contribute to the appearance of complex diseases

  An international study, in which researchers from the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) have participated as the only Spanish researchers, has shown that rare genetic variants, which are present in less than 1% of the population, also contribute to determining individual susceptibility to suffer from complex diseases such as hypertriglyceridemia (high levels of triglycerides).

  Comparison of the human genome with genomes of other animals helps to identify new functional repetitive structures in proteins

  A project executed by the research group on Evolutionary Genomics of GRIB (IMIM -UPF) employed comparison of the human genome with the genomes of other species of vertebrates to verify that the repetitive motifs found in human proteins are important for the good operation of the body and which could correspond to the fraction of the genome called ‘junk’ (with no function).

  The ARITMO Project Researches the Risk of Arrhythmia that May Be Caused by Some Antipsychotic, Antihistamine and Anti-Infective Drugs

  

  Cardiac arrhythmia caused by medications is a priority in pharmacological safety as they are difficult to predict. Sudden cardiac death and Torsades de Pointes (TDP) are serious side effects of some antipsychotic, antihistamine and anti-infective drugs that induce prolonged QT intervals.

  Polyphenols, fundamental to regulating genes involved in heart disease

  

  A study carried out by researchers at the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) has shown for the first time that the beneficial effects of virgin olive oil, a rich source of polyphenols in the Mediterranean diet, can cause changes in the manifestation of certain genes involved in atherosclerosis.

  Contamination accelerates the atherosclerosis process

  

  Atherosclerosis is a disease where fatty matter is deposited along the walls of the arteries, which can lead to heart attacks or cerebrovascular accidents.This is the first study that proves that the population who lives within 100 metres of a motorway or busy road suffers an acceleration in atherosclerosis more than double of its regular process.

  Students will experiment in microgravity on board of European Space Agency Flights

  

  A team of student researchers and interns from the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) and the Foundation CIM will conduct a scientific experiment aboard three parabolic flights scheduled by the ESA, on the 3, 4 and 5 November. The experiment intends to improve medical treatment for astronauts through a better understanding of the drug absorption mechanisms in diseases such as cancer and AIDS, will take on board.

  Moderate physical activity can help stop the evolution of COPD

  We must stress that every year, 18.000 Spaniards die from COPD, a figure that makes it the top cause of avoidable death in Spain and the only pathology related to smoking that continues to be on the rise. According to the EPISCAN study, the prevalence of COPD in Spain currently extends to 10.2% of the population –nearly one and a half million citizens.

  Estimating the risk of death in COPD

  

  Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects almost half of smokers of advanced age. Although clinical manifestations and disease severity vary greatly across patients, treatment is often similar. Through the development of a new risk index for COPD patients, researchers are seeking ways to improve this situation.

  The Use of Bleach Reduces Allergy Sensitivity, but Increases Risk of Respiratory Problems

  

  Researchers at the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) and the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) have observed that the household use of bleach is associated with a lower sensitivity to allergens, both inside the home (for example, cat allergens) as well as those outside the home (pollen allergens).
