A two-year project funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program Protecting mental health in times of change. Santa Coloma de Gramenet will host a large-scale European project, MENTBEST, starting from September 2024, led by Dr. Benedikt Amann from Hospital del Mar Barcelona. The project aims to address suicide prevention and the reduction of depression and emotional distress in communities undergoing rapid transformation in a community-based approach.

Having a higher biological or epigenetic age, which differs from chronological age and is influenced by lifestyle habits and external environmental factors, increases the risk of death in patients treated for a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Conversely, having a lower biological age increases the likelihood of experiencing one of the most common complications in these cases, the spasm of the cerebral arteries, known as vasospasm. This is the first time this relationship can be demonstrated, opening the door to research on how these factors can be modified to improve patient prognosis.

An international study published in Science Translational Medicine involving the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute shows that there are substantial differences between men and women in the energy metabolism of renal tubular cells. In men with diabetes, more markers of oxidative stress in cells and processes linked to cell death are detected, which may predispose to diabetic nephropathy. The work may provide tools to personalize the treatment and evolution of people with diabetes and kidney disease, as well as to detect possible therapeutic targets based on this fact.

The institution's Governing Council has approved the appointment of Dr. Raventós, who had already been manager of the institution between 2008 and 2011. He will take over the position from April 1 from Dr. Olga Pané, who has been manager for the last twelve years. The Governing Council of Consorci Mar Parc de Salut (Hospital del Mar) has approved the appointment of Dr. Jaume Raventós as the new manager of the institution. Between 1990 and 2019, the incidence of myocardial infarction in the Girona area decreased by 1% in women and 4% in men each year in the population aged 35 to 74 years, while, in the last 10 years, its lethality, the number of people who die 28 days after the onset of symptoms, has remained stagnant at around 15%. Data from almost five million hospital admissions and more than 70,000 death certificates have been analyzed as part of the REGICOR study, Registre Gironí del COR. These data suggest that primary prevention and rapidity of care have contributed to reducing the incidence of infarction and sudden death, increasing the chances of survival among patients arriving at the hospital.

An international study has used a computational biology tool that, by analysing a multitude of biological data from multiple sclerosis patients ranging from genetic information to the whole organism, reveals the relationship between elements of different biological scales and improves our knowledge and the diagnosis of the disease. International research led by the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences (MELIS) at Pompeu Fabra University, in collaboration with Hospital del Mar, Hospital Clínic, Charité - Medical University of Berlin, and the universities of Oslo and Genoa, has developed a computational biology tool, based on multi-level network analysis, to achieve an integrated vision of multiple sclerosis. This tool could be used to study other complex diseases such as types of dementia.

This is revealed by the largest observational study in this field carried out to date in the world. It is published in the journal Nutrients. The work is based on data from the UK Biobank database and has made it possible to analyze information from more than 260,000 people. Its conclusions may allow a more detailed definition of future studies on omega-3 supplementation for the prevention of dementia. The potential benefits of these fatty acids are maximal in men over 60 and in dementias other than Alzheimer's disease.
