The Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) awards two grants to researchers at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute

The AECC has awarded 186 grants in 2021, totalling approximately 20 million euros. Two of these will benefit IMIM researchers, Teresa Lobo, who is receiving a postdoctoral grant, and Arnau Sabater, who has been able to participate in the laboratory internship programme.

The Spanish Association Against Cancer awarded its 2021 research grants at a ceremony held on 11 November at its headquarters in Barcelona. In total, 186 projects and nearly 20 million euros have been allocated with the aim of continuing progress into cancer research, focusing on the patient and further increasing cancer survival. In this edition, two researchers linked to the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM) will benefit from the grants. Teresa Lobo, a researcher in the Molecular Mechanisms of Cancer and Stem Cells research group, has received a postdoctoral grant of 160,000 euros. And Arnau Sabater, has been awarded 1,200 euros as part of the AECC laboratory internship programme, related to his work in the Poly (ADP-ribose) Polymerase research group.

Dra. Teresa Lobo.

Dr. Laureano Molins, Vice-president of the AECC and President of the association in Barcelona, pointed out that "It is essential to continue our research into cancer. Research saves lives. Thanks to research, in recent years survival has increased by 3.3 points in men and 2.6 in women, in an environment in which the incidence of the disease has grown by 7.2% since 2016. That is why our association dedicates a very important part of its activity to promoting research and strives to ensure that everyone has access to the results of this work."

These grants are designed to support research talent in order to guarantee the job stability of scientists so that they can develop their talent in Spain, to promote clinical investigation so that medical professionals are involved in research and thereby bring the results closer to patients, and to continue to support innovation with specific grants.
