The Hospital del Mar Research Institute participates in one of the projects selected in the CaixaResearch Health Research 2024 call

The "la Caixa" Foundation has selected 29 new high-impact, socially relevant biomedical research projects. One of these projects, led by the Center for Genomic Regulation, includes participation by Dr. Toni Celià-Terrassa, coordinator of the Cancer Stem Cells and Metastasis Dynamics Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute.

The "la Caixa" Foundation selected 29 new high-impact, excellence-focused biomedical research projects within the CaixaResearch Health Research 2024 call, funded with 25.7 million euros, to be carried out at various research centers, hospitals, and universities in Spain and Portugal. One of these projects, led by Dr. Luis Serrano from the Center for Genomic Regulation, involves the Hospital del Mar Research Institute through the participation of Dr. Toni Celià-Terrassa, coordinator of the Cancer Stem Cells and Metastasis Dynamics Research Group.

This seventh edition of the call, to which 580 proposals in basic, clinical, and translational research were submitted, is specifically aimed at addressing health challenges across different areas. The grants provide financial support of up to 500,000 euros for projects presented by a single research organization and up to one million euros for projects presented by consortia of between 2 and 5 research organizations. All projects will have up to 3 years to carry out their research.

The selected project will analyze the feasibility of a bacterial therapy to combat lung metastasis. It will receive one million euros. Its goal is to use genetically modified bacteria to colonize the tumor and deliver LCOR protein and immunotherapy to tumor cells simultaneously, aiming to improve antitumor response and reduce unwanted effects on the rest of the body.
