The general improvement in air quality during the 1990’s in Switzerland appears to have had beneficial effects on the respiratory health of adults. This is documented by new results from the SAPALDIA study (Swiss Cohort Study on Air Pollution and Lung Diseases in Adults) which have just been published in the renowned “American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine”

José Montilla, the president of Catalonia’s government, accompanied by health minister Marina Geli, was awarded the Josep Trueta medals and plaques for outstanding contribution to healthcare this Thursday, the 26th of February at 7 p.m. For the ninth consecutive year, Catalonia’s government honoured a series of people and organisations who have contributed to improving healthcare. The ceremony took place at the Palau de Pedralbes.

The collaboration agreement between CREAL and the University of Arizona will be presented on the 16th of February at 12:30 h. in the Auditorium PRBB. The act aims to establish a collaboration plan on the research being conducted by the two centres on asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonar Disease after the success of the agreement signed last year between CREAL and INSERM of France.

For the first time, a study has evaluated the contribution of the Mediterranean diet on the perception that people have of their own physical and mental health. The report concludes that the positive effects of the Mediterranean diet are not provided only by the composition of the food ingested, but also by the lifestyle associated with this diet: eating at home more, spending time preparing the food, sharing meals, etc.; elements that contribute to improving the perception of an individual’s well-being.

On February 3rd and 4th, a group of European experts will lay the foundations for an in-depth analysis of the public health challenges relating to mental disorders in Europe. This is the aim of a project funded by the European Commission’s Directorate General of Public Health and Consumer Affairs (SANCO) and coordinated by IMIM-Hospital del Mar.

An extensive report to be published this February in the prestigious journal Addiction shows the results of a study about the evolution of the incidence of heroin use in Spain from 1971 to 2005. This exhaustive work, spanning 35 years of the history of an addiction, included the analysis of data from 167,753 individuals with a heroin addiction problem.

A study by the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) and the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) suggests that a diet moderately rich in fish (2 or 3 times a week) during pregnancy is associated with an increase in children’s intellectual capacity later in life.

BiblioPRO is an online library which provides exhaustive and high-quality scientific information on health-related quality of life instruments and other Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs) for use in Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries. The aim of the library is to facilitate the appropriate use of these instruments in research, clinical practice, and health care planning and management

The study is the first to show that women who are exposed to hairspray in the workplace during the first trimester of pregnancy have more than double the risk of having a son with the genital birth defect hypospadias.The study was carried out in the UK and coordinated by the Imperial College London, with the participation of the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) in Barcelona and University College Cork.
