The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) is located within the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) building, 150 metres from Hospital del Mar, in a restricted-access area that is controlled by electronic cards.
It is 280 m2 in area, was built in 2005, and was accredited by the Catalan Government in 2016. It has two admissions areas, Zone A with 8 beds, and Zone B with 4 beds. These areas are continuously monitored by the nursing staff via CCTV and contain equipment that facilitates the constant tracking of vital signs.
The unit has a crash cart together with an alarm system and emergency procedure to guarantee safety measures.
It has a kitchen and lounge, separate from the living areas, with a small kitchen in the Unit and a kitchen in the PRBB building that provide an area where the volunteers' meals can be prepared and supervised.
The Unit has three outpatient clinics for holding volunteer screening visits and some follow-up evaluations. All three are kitted out like a medical office.
There are two offices for the medical and nursing staff, just in front of the entrance to the unit. Two offices for management and technical-administrative and support staff.
This area is located inside the Unit, which allows samples to be handled rapidly once they have been extracted. There are two centrifuges and a freezer, allowing the samples to be processed and temporarily stored until they are sent to their destination.
