The scientific community is now in agreement on the need to limit the use of animals for experimentation only when it is absolutely necessary and when no alternative methods are available to achieve the same results. Furthermore, the number of animals used in each experiment should be minimized, and experimental procedures should be designed to reduce the suffering of the animals. These principles are collectively known as the "3R principle" of good scientific practice and are included in various European regulations governing animal experimentation.
3Rs Principle:
Therefore, research projects must be designed and reviewed carefully to adapt to these 3Rs, from the researchers themselves when they plan their research to the review/amendment by the Animal Experimentation Ethics Committees of the Research Centers and as well as by the Administration bodies competent to approve or deny the procedures.
