As a Research Center, the Hospital del Mar Research Institute assumes the responsibility of carrying out animal experimentation and wants to be involved in the commitments of transparency and the 3 principles.
As an entity that adhered to the Transparency Agreement, the Hospital de Mar Research Institute undertakes and supports initiatives that improve the dissemination of our activities with experimental animals, with the intention that the public knows what we do and why, how we do it to comply with the 3R principles, and what scientific/health benefit we obtain.
Some transparency actions we carry out are:
- The Hospital de Mar Research Institute assumes the commitment to send the annual reports to the COSCE/EARA, which are accessible by country at the link: Animal research statistics by country.
- All research projects carried out at the Hospital de Mar Research Institute that involve the use of experimental animals are reviewed, amended, and approved by the Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee (CEEA-PRBB), as well as by the competent body of the Generalitat of Catalonia (Animal Experimentation Commission, Department of Environment and Sustainability).
- All research projects carried out at the Hospital de Mar Research Institute notify the competent body of the Generalitat of Catalonia, if applicable, about the details of the procedures used in animal experimentation through non-technical summaries. These summaries, in language accessible to the public, explain and justify the experimental methods with animals and how they have been adapted to the first of the 3Rs. All non-technical summaries can be consulted in the search tools of the Directorate-General for the Environment of the European Commission:
- The PRBB Research Centers organize an annual Open Day event and guided tours that allow visitors to learn about the research being carried out by researchers from the Hospital de Mar Research Institute. These tours include information about animal experimentation, if possible. The main purpose of these events is to make the public aware of the benefits that society can obtain from the research being conducted and will be able to obtain in the future.

This section explains the Institution's commitment to transparency and prioritizing the 3R principle in our research. The various dissemination activities, scientific advances, and improvements in implementing the 3R principle are also described.
