The Fluid Biomarkers and Translational Neurology Research Group focuses on the investigation of fluid biomarkers, mainly in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid, intending to deepen the biological basis of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases, especially in their early stages. The multidisciplinary team of this group dedicates its efforts to discovering new therapeutic targets, developing and validating biomarkers to improve the diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, and studying their underlying molecular mechanisms.
The presence of researchers from different disciplines, such as clinical neurology, biochemistry, proteomics, bioinformatics, biostatistics, and neuropsychology, in line with the translational approach of the group, allows establishing a dialogue between patients and the knowledge generated. In this sense, the team works to identify problems in clinical practice and analyze them, transferring the research results to the patient and the rest of society.
The group, attached to the Barcelonabeta Brain Research Center (BBRC), the research center of the Pasqual Maragall Foundation, has two main lines of research. The first is based on developing, validating, and applying new biomarkers that improve the diagnosis of Alzheimer's or other neurodegenerative diseases in the earliest stages. The second part of the execution of the HeBe project focused on identifying blood factors that have a rejuvenating or aging effect on the brain, and that can become therapeutic targets for Alzheimer's disease.
