Molecular Cytogenetics Platform

A comprehensive service which includes the various cytogenetic analysis techniques which is of great use within the field of translational research for characterising cytogenetic alterations both in humans and mice. It uses conventional cytogenetic techniques, FISH, spectral karyotyping (SKY) and microarray techniques by means of GeneChip hybridisation (Affymetrix Platform®) (SAM).

This platform offers scientific and technological support both for designing analysis strategy and for interpreting the results obtained. The final results are obtained from the analysis of the partial results obtained through different cytogenetic techniques (including microarrays) which complement each other. This platform is offered to the researchers of the various centres which make up the PRBB as well as the rest of the scientific community.

Services offered

  • Comprehensive service which includes 3 different cytogenetic analysis techniques:
  • Conventional cytogenetics which makes it possible to identify the karyotype of human cells.
  • Fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) using:
    • centromeric probes for detecting numeric alterations
    • Specific locus probes for detecting chromosomal gains, losses and translocations. It can be applied both on tissue coming from cytogenetics cultures (Carnov-fixed samples) and on fresh tissue, as well as on any paraffin tissue.
    • Chromosome painting probes of human karyotype chromosomes. These can only be applied on samples processed by cytogenetics and which present metaphases.
  • Multicolour spectral karyotyping (SKY) in the chromosomes of humans or mice. It makes it possible to identify each chromosome by its colour and to precisely identify chromosomal alterations which are difficult to detect using conventional cytogenetics, such as translocations, derivative chromosomes or marker chromosomes. The main applications of this technique are:
    • Cytogenetic characterisation of chromosomal alterations in tumour cells (haematological malignancies and solid tumours).
    • Cytogenetic characterisation of chromosomal alterations in human cell lines.
    • Cytogenetic characterisation of chromosomal alterations in mice cell lines. These three techniques can be complemented by the microarray technique (Affymetrix®) by means of GeneChip hybridisation.
